The sooner the content of this article becomes general knowledge, the healthier the developed world will be! The sooner this becomes general knowledge for you, the more empowered you'll be!
Of course, a calorie deficit must be present for fat loss to occur but this alone won’t always do the job. If I had a dollar for every time it didn't...
In fact if the deficit is too extreme and the strategy too aggressive, it'll have negative long term effects. Negatives effects on basal metabolic rate (BMR) and weight, not to mention mood, strength and hormones.
If you've tried calorie restriction (extreme or not) and have found your progress is stagnant or non existent then it's likely you haven't considered the other factors that influence your fat burning ability. The key influencers are:
Nutrient Deficiency: including but not limited to Vitamin D, Iron, Zinc, Iodine, Selenium, CoQ10, B12 and Magnesium.
Hormonal imbalances: including but not limited to insulin, oestrogen, progesterone and thyroid hormones.
Eating too much
Eating too little
Eating at the wrong times
Not moving enough
Not sleeping enough
Inflammation
Poor gut health
Food intolerance
Stress
Sometimes the cause is obvious and other times it isn't, which is when further education and testing becomes critical. Critical because, if you continue to restrict calories it could be antagonising a whole range of the above factors leading to further fat loss resistance - and so the cycle of restriction and frustration continues.
